Fry bread was and still is a staple in the native diet. Although it did not originate with the Cherokee, it is a part of the culture. I didn’t grow up in the native culture so I’ve been learning about it for the last 20 years. Tonight, for the first time, I made fry bread. It is traditionally served with honey. I dusted it with sugar. I’ve been baking bread for years so the technique was familiar. But the outcome tasted much more rewarding than any other bread I’ve made.
